Marc CHAGALL - Signed & dedicated - Stained glass for Jerusalem

Marc Chagall (1887–1985)
Stained Glass for Jerusalem (Glasmalereien für Jerusalem)
Text by Jean Leymarie (translated by U.R. Hemmerich)
Monte Carlo: André Sauret, 1962
Large quarto (approx. 32.5 × 24.4 cm), complete in two volumes, comprising 211 pages. Richly illustrated throughout with numerous color and black reproductions, including two original color lithographs by Chagall (Mourlot 365–366).
Publisher’s original softcover bindings, with illustrated dust jackets and original acetate slipcase. A well-preserved example, with only minimal signs of wear to the covers.
This publication documents Chagall’s celebrated stained glass project for the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, one of the most important monumental commissions of his career.
The work reproduces the series of biblical-themed designs created for the synagogue windows, reflecting Chagall’s deep engagement with spiritual symbolism, color, and light. The project stands among the artist’s most significant achievements in glass and architectural art.
Edition:
German-language edition. Unnumbered.
Particular copy:
This example is distinguished by a full-page handwritten dedication signed by Marc Chagall and dated “St. Paul 1975.”
The inscription reads:
“Pour Thomas Bangert … Marc Chagall, St. Paul 1975”
As with other works signed in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, this places the inscription firmly within Chagall’s late period, enhancing both authenticity and desirability.
Bibliography:
Cramer, Catalogue raisonné des livres illustrés, no. 49
Mourlot, Chagall Lithographe, nos. 365–366
Remarks:
Although the edition itself is not limited, copies containing two original lithographs by Chagall already occupy a higher tier within his illustrated books.
When combined with a clear, dated autograph inscription, such examples become notably scarcer and significantly more desirable than standard copies on the market.
