Note: Picasso was heavily involved in the Peace Movement in the aftermath of the Second World War and a number of works were published with his permission and co-operation “after” original drawings and paintings some of which he had already donated to the movement to help raise funds. This particular work was made for the Global Festival of youth held in Moscow in 1957. It is a scarce and desirable item. Doubtless many were made but few have survived to this day and fewer still have survived in this excellent quality and condition. With the dove of Peace Picasso created an extraordinarily powerful and lasting political symbol, adopted by campaigners for Peace, Liberation and Equality throughout the world. Doves had a highly personal significance for Picasso going back to childhood memories of his father painting the doves which were kept in the family home. Picasso’s daughter was born on the eve of the Paris Peace Congress and he gave her the name Paloma, the Spanish word for dove.
