Very rare 3rd state, printed in only a few copies, before the change of the caption for "Le Charivari". With the handwritten "Bon à tirer" in the lower right corner of the sheet. Despite this, the caption was changed for the magazine's edition. Reference: Delteil 3554/3, Daumier Register 3554/3 (our impression mentioned there). Provenance: Ex collection Roger Passeron (Lugt 4096) with his collector's stamp on verso.
The sheet refers to the rebellions of the Greek population of Crete against the Turkish occupation forces and the bloody suppression of the rebellions by the Turks.
