Charlotte HILMER - Frauenporträt (Portrait of a woman)

1930s. Woodcut on Japanese laid paper, 35.9 x 27.4 cm (block), 50 x 37.3 cm (sheet). Signed ‘Wegel’ in pencil by the artist in the lower right corner.
Charlotte Hilmer, born in Hamburg as Charlotte Wegel, studied in Hamburg under Eduard Steinbach and from 1930 to 1933 under Anton Kolig in Stuttgart. Kolig's influence is still evident in Hilmer's later work, in which nude depictions take up a prominent role. In 1939, she married the painter and sculptor Arnold Hilmer. After actively exhibiting new works in the post-war period ( e.g. Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1958), Hilmer was quickly forgotten after her early death and is thus a typical representative of the so-called ‘lost generation’. Apart from the few black-and-white woodcuts in the expressionist style, some of which were signed with “Wegel” (see previous catalogue no.), she also produced colour monotypes in the 1930s. Literature: Rainer Herold: Charlotte Hilmer 1909-1958, Galerie Herold, Hamburg 1999.
