Kurt Rudolf Hoffmann (1923-2008), who called himself K.R.H. Sonderborg after his Danish birthplace of Sønderborg, joined the Zen 49 group in the 1950s, which also included Willi Baumeister, Rolf Cavael, Gerhard Fietz, Rupprecht Geiger, Willy Hempel, Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff and Fritz Winter. In 1953 Sonderborg went to Paris to take lessons in etching with S. W. Hayter at Atelier 17. Sonderborg is one of the most important representatives of the German Informel.
