Jesús Rafael Soto was a Venezuelan painter and sculptor.
He was one of the main exponents of the kinetic art movement.
After his studies, he directed the Escuela de Artes Plasticas in Maracaibo from 1947 to 1950. In the same year, he left for Paris, where he met Jean Tinguely, Victor Vasarely and Yaacov Agam. With them, he organized several exhibitions at the Denise René Gallery and the Salon des Realites Nouvelles and, thanks to these, became known worldwide.
Between the 1970s and the 1990s, his work was exhibited at MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) and the Guggenheim Museum, both located in New York.
